What is a P11D, and how does it affect me?

If you’re an employer, director, or employee, you may be wondering what is a P11D, and how does it affect me? It’s a question we’re asked regularly, especially around year-end and payroll deadlines.

A P11D is all about benefits and expenses provided through employment. Understanding what needs to be reported, who pays the tax and when it’s due can help you avoid surprises, penalties, and unnecessary stress.

At Infinity Accounting, we help businesses handle P11Ds accurately and on time, so everything stays compliant and clear.

What is a P11D?

A P11D is a form that employers must submit to HMRC each year. It reports any expenses or benefits in kind provided to directors or employees that are not included in their salary.

These are often referred to as “perks” or “extras” and might include things like:

  • Company cars
  • Private medical insurance
  • Interest-free or low-interest loans
  • Living accommodation

The purpose of the P11D is to tell HMRC about taxable benefits, so the correct tax can be collected either through:

  • An employee’s Self-Assessment tax return, or
  • An adjustment to their PAYE tax code

HMRC’s official guidance on P11Ds can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/paye-forms-p11d

The exact rules covering what has to be listed in a P11D are complicated, and change from time to time. Employers need to be very sure to keep the details accurate, though.

How does a P11D affect employees and directors?

This is where the second part of the question comes in what is a P11D, and how does it affect me personally?

If you receive benefits in kind:

  • You may pay Income Tax on the value of those benefits
  • The tax may be collected through your tax code or Self Self-Assessment
  • You don’t usually pay National Insurance on the benefit itself

For employers, there’s an additional responsibility.

What is a P11D(b)?

Alongside individual P11Ds, employers must also submit a P11D(b). This form:

  • Confirms that P11Ds have been submitted
  • Calculates the employer’s Class 1A National Insurance due on benefits provided

Class 1A National Insurance is paid by the employer, not the employee.

What types of benefits are reported on a P11D?

A P11D is used to report Benefits in Kind. While not every benefit is taxable, many common ones are.

Examples include:

  • Company cars and fuel
  • Private medical or dental insurance
  • Company credit cards
  • Rail season tickets
  • Living accommodation
  • Non-business travel or entertainment expenses
  • Interest-free or low-interest loans (including director’s loans)
  • Gym memberships
  • Certain childcare costs

As a general rule, if it’s not part of basic salary and not exempt, it may count as a taxable benefit.

Why accuracy matters with P11Ds

  • P11D rules can be complex, and errors can lead to:
  • Incorrect tax being charged
  • HMRC queries
  • Penalties for late or inaccurate submissions
  • Extra admin to fix mistakes

Keeping records up to date and reviewing benefits regularly makes the process much smoother.
